DESCRIBE ANATOMY OF MAXILLARY ANTRUM (ANTRUM OF HIGMORE):

    Maxillary antrum is the largest paranasal sinuses.

SHAPE: Pyramidal.

CAPACITY: 15ml (adult).

MEASUREMENT: 33 mm high, 35 mm deep, 25 mm wide.

DIRECTION: Base- towards lateral wall of nose. Apex- Laterally into the Zygomatic process of maxilla.

RELATIONS:

ANTERIOR WALL- Formed by facial surface of maxilla. Related to soft tissue of cheek.

POSTERIOR WALL- Related to Infratemporal & Pterygopalatine fossa

MEDIAL WALL- Related to middle & inferior meatus (Uncinate process, anterior & posterior frontanelle, inferior turbinate & meatus).

FLOOR- Formed by alveolar & palatine process of maxilla & is situated about 1cm below the level of floor of nose. Related to root of second premolar & 1st molar teeth.

ROOF- Formed by the floor of Orbit. Traversed by infraorbital nerve & vessels.

OSTIUM- High up in the medial wall. Opens in the post inferior part of ethmoidal infundibulum into middle meatus. Accessory ostium present behind main ostium in 30% cases.

FUNCTIONS OF NOSE: 1.  Respiration. 2. Air conditioning of inspired air. 3. Protection of lower airway. 4. Vocal resonance. 5. Nasal reflex function. 6. Olfaction.
