A carrier is an infected person or animal that harbours a specific infectious agent in absence of discernible clinical disease & serves as a potential source of infection for others.

THE ELEMENTS IN A CARRIER STATE ARE:

  1. Presence of disease agent in the body.
  2. Absence of recognizable symptoms & state of disease.
  3. Shedding of the disease agent in the discharge or excretions thus acting as a source of infection for other person.
  4. Carriers are less infectious, but more dangerous as- they escape recognition & continue living a normal life among population or community→ Readily infect susceptible individuals over a wider area & longer period of time under favourable conditions.
